The images above were acquired on July 29, 2021, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite. The fires are burning just a few miles from areas that burned in the horrific Camp fire of 2018. The Dixie fire has destroyed 64 homes, businesses, and buildings and damaged eight others while marching across nearly 375 square miles (970 square kilometers) of rural and semi-rural land-an area larger than the city of San Diego. It is the largest wildfire in California in 2021 and 11th largest in state history. The fire has consumed more than 240,000 acres of timber and chaparral in Butte and Plumas counties and in Lassen National Forest.

Areas marked in red indicate where active burning was detected within 24 hours of the most recent fires reflected on the map. The locations of the fires on the map are approximate, derived from data reported by the NASA FIRMS satellite-based fire detection system, which makes observations several times a day. The map includes active and recent fires reported by the Wildland Fire Interagency Geospatial Services Group.
